Cartier delves into archives for Les Nécessaires à Parfum

Les Nécessaires à Parfum, Cartier’s archives-inspired fragrance offer, consists of slim metal shells encasing a 30ml perfume. The collection is launching this March with five cases and nine of the brand’s scents, with more set to be added over time.

Cartier’s latest fragrance launch takes its cues from the brand’s Nécessaire vanity cases from the 1920s and 1930s — ornately decorated, art-deco-influenced rectangular cases that typically housed a lipstick, powder and mirror.

For Les Nécessaires à Parfum, Cartier developed five metal shells (g.pivaudran), each sporting a different plate design with geometric and stylized patterns - the ridged aluminium plates are also the work of g.pivaudran, while Silvant made the plates decorated with color.

More than seven steps were needed to create the slim shells, including metal engraving, hand lacquering and high-precision polishing. The shell acts as a cover for the rectangular, 30ml glass fragrance bottle (Pochet du Courval) that is slid inside and held in place with magnets.

Customers can mix and match the cases and the scents. For the first year of launch, nine fragrances from Cartier’s portfolio are available, including Baiser Volé, La Panthère and Déclaration. More scents are set to be added, to eventually encompass all of the fragrances that have marked the history of the luxury jewelry brand. Additional case designs are also planned.

Conceived as objects to be kept, Les Nécessaires à Parfum can also be personalized with a name or initials via engraving on the shell and hot-stamping on the red presentation case.
