Chanel lightweights packaging for new N°1 range

Chanel has launched N°1 de Chanel, a new beauty line that includes anti-aging skincare, make-up and a fragrance mist. The packaging is eco-designed, with a focus on lightweighting, using recycled or recyclable materials and limiting the use of plastics.

After its N°5 flacons integrating PCR glass and bio-based fragrance caps for Les Eaux de Chanel, Chanel has put the emphasis on eco-designed packaging for its new N°1 de Chanel beauty line.

Some 80% of the products in the range, which comprises skincare, make-up and fragrance, are made of glass. Thanks to a streamlined design, the weight of the jars and bottles is an average of 30% lighter compared to other Chanel packs of similar capacity.

Limiting the use of plastics, particularly single use, was another area of focus. The new line also forgoes the use of cellophane and paper leaflets. Organic inks decorate the glass bottles, while on the lids, the brand’s logo is engraved in the mold rather than reproduced using ink. All of the lids in the line contain “bio-sourced or recycled” content, Chanel says.

Thanks to a partnership with Finnish company Sulapac, the Revitalizing Cream’s patent-pending lid is made using camellia seed shells, as well as FSC-certified wood shavings, incorporating 90% bio-sourced materials in total. The black lid has a matte satin finish and is engraved with Chanel’s double C logo. Multiple design aspects including the material’s resistance to heat variation, its sensorial qualities and the depth of the finish were considered when creating the lid, described as a “genuine technological challenge”. The cream comes in a patented, refillable glass jar said to be 50% lighter. Refilling the jar twice cuts down on greenhouse gas emissions by 50%, according to Chanel.

The N°1 de Chanel line – of which red camellia is the star ingredient – comprises a serum, cream, eye cream, lotion, serum-in-mist and a powder-to-foam cleanser. It also includes a foundation, lip and cheek balm and a fragrance mist. Formulas contain up to 97% ingredients of natural origin, and up to 76% of camellia derivatives including petals, seeds and yeasts.

For the L’Eau Rouge Revitalizing Fragrance Mist, house perfumer Olivier Polge opted for a skincare base with camellia water and red camellia extract. The floral scent contains notes of jasmine, orange blossom, rose and red fruits.
