Diptyque unveils customizable travel spray

New products from French brand Diptyque put packaging front and center. We take a closer look at the novelties, from refillable formats to travel sprays that can be personalized using Scrabble-like tiles.

This month, Diptyque is rolling out a refillable travel fragrance with an innovative design. Inspired by the rotating letters of old-style airport and train station departure boards, the black cylindrical aluminum flacon can be personalized thanks to a customization kit featuring 72 tiles (numbers and letters). The user simply unscrews the base and slides down the tiles to replace them with nine tiles of their choice (if the chosen word is shorter than nine letters black squares can be used to add spaces). Before personalization, this section displays the fill level.

The aluminum travel spray (Packman) features a patented refill system, Techniplast’s RT-PLUG, which enables the flacon to be refilled without unscrewing the pump. The consumer simply clips it onto the bottle’s spray pump and presses down lightly, allowing the liquid to be drawn upwards into the travel bottle through the pump. The main difficulty in the design, says Techniplast, was developing a mechanism that maintained a simple and intuitive gesture. The travel spray has three settings: lock, spray and refill. The 12ml travel fragrance retails for €95.

After teaming up with French glass artist Jean-Michel Othoniel to create the Othoniel Rosa candle last year (decorated by JPM Décors), the brand is launching an EdT in September. Like Diptyque’s other scents, Othoniel Rosa’s oval flacon (Bormioli Luigi) is topped with a glossy black cap (Technicaps) in bakelite, made from 40% wood pulp. It is adorned with a screenprinted adhesive label (Printor Packaging) in a matte finish showcasing Diptyque’s distinctive branding. The candle retails at €60 for 190g and the fragrance at €135 for 100ml.

In May, Diptyque began making its hand wash and hand lotion available in refill formats, switching from plastic to glass bottles. The bottles (Stoelzle) topped with sleek black pumps (Aptar) feature the brand’s logo engraved in the mold and a screenprinted facing label (Printor Packaging) designed for a “no label look”.

This fall, Diptyque is adding an electric wall diffuser to its Un Air de Diptyque collection of home fragrance diffusers. The diffuser (TX Cube) uses cartridges containing fragrance-encapsulated beads that release scent via a cold diffusion system. One of the major technical challenges was finding the right balance between the power of the fan that blows across the beads to release the fragrance and the noise made, the supplier explains. Producing the gilded, fine metal grill that fits on the front of the diffuser was also a feat, and the plastic materials used had to be compatible with the fragrance in that the scent must not become impregnated in the plastic.
