Don Papa Rum: punchy art from the Philippines

For the past four years, Don Papa Rum, a premium small batch brand from Negros Occidental, Philippines, has been organizing art competitions in partnership with  Art Fair Philippines to encourage up-and-coming artists from around the country.

The brand’s latest limited-edition art canister (GPA Global) features the artwork of Samuel Penaso, a painter, sculptor and performance artist and winner of the fourth annual Don Papa Art Competition. His design, Botany, uses acrylic on reflective stainless steel to depict man’s co-existence and interdependence with the vegetal and animal world. “Each year, the level of artistry continues to elevate and there is always great anticipation from our different markets with regard to the Don Papa Art Canister,” remarks Monica Llamas-Garcia, communications director of Bleeding Heart Rum Company, the owner of Don Papa Rum.

The gift box, also featuring the artist's illustrations, encloses a 70cl bottle of seven-year-old Don Papa aged in American oak barrels as well as a green tarsier-themed drinking glass. Packaging design and branding agency Stranger & Stranger created the designs for both projects. “We keep our bottles consistent, but play around with the design, colors and canisters per expression. We source our bottles from France, our corks from Portugal and our labels are printed in Italy. We feel that a world-class product deserves world-class packaging!” said Llamas-Garcia.
