LUXE PACK in Green 2021 – The New York winners

A record-breaking number of submissions were received for the LUXE PACK in Green awards at LUXE PACK New York last week. More than 50 entries were competing in the awards, which recognize sustainable product innovations and CSR initiatives. We take a look at the nominees and the projects that took home the award.

Most Sustainable Packaging Product/Solution Design

The nominees in this category were:

Apr Beauty Group – Bamboo Refillable Propel/Repel Stick

Balance Inc – Molded Fiber Compact

Ecological Fibers – Plastic Free Coated Materials

Golden Arrow – Lancome E-Commerce Solution Box

Myc Packaging Innovation – Metallica Compact

And the winner is…

APR Beauty Group Inc was crowned the winner for its 100% bamboo refillable stick. The mono-material, biodegradable pack is said to offer the same propel/repel dispensing functionality as a traditional plastic deodorant stick. The bamboo refill cartridge fits into the bamboo base, and is sealed with a bamboo disc and closure.

Best CSR Initiative

Three companies were competing in the best CSR initiative category:

Avient  – Alliance To End Plastic Waste

Golden Arrow – Circular Production Ecosystem/New Molded Fiber Production

Knoll Packaging – Knoll Material Consumption Database

In this category, the judging panel decreed Knoll Packaging the winner for its Material Consumption Database that launched in January 2021. “We developed this material consumption database as an effort to better understand our supply chain,” says Knoll Packaging Global Sustainability Director Wincy Cheng. “We can collect information about our suppliers beyond tier 1, type of material, origin of material and how much of each material is used.”

People’s Choice

New for 2021 was the People’s Choice award, with voting opened to the industry public via the MY LUXE PACK platform. Balance Inc scooped the People’s Choice award for its Molded Fiber Compact. The pack, designed to function like a molded plastic palette but made of molded fiber, has removable magnets and a mirror that can be taken out and kept. The compact mask is made of varnished paper.
