Mouchette lights the way with debut collection

French home fragrances brand Mouchette launched this April with a range of seven scented candles. Novel decoration techniques, a fragrance diffuser and accessories are in the works.

Founded by young entrepreneur Mathilde Tellier, Mouchette was conceived to offer high-end, made-in-France home fragrance products, but at mid-market prices — a 190g candle retails for €29. The candles' fragrances were created by Floracos, who works with a packaging supplier for the secondary packs.

When it comes to design, five of the scented candles (numbered Une through Cinq) take their cues from “the link between dreams and reality. Nacre (mother of pearl) – inspired by a Tiffany lamp - and Suie (soot), meanwhile, were designed to give “an olfactive identity to a material,” explains Tellier,  daughter of Valérie Tellier, CEO of decoration company Val Laquage.

The glass containers come from old stock or production seconds recovered from glassmakers, mainly in France, that are then lacquered and screen-printed (Val Laquage).

The candles’ cylindrical secondary packs are pad-printed recycled paperboard. “From the plant-based soy and coconut wax to the candles’ secondary packs, the choice of high-end materials was paramount. I didn’t want simple, thin paperboard boxes that don’t reflect the product inside,” Tellier explains. “I instead wanted something heavier, more rigid, that could be reused by the consumer.”

A candle jar decorated using digitally printed hot stamping is in the works, and Tellier is looking to explore new decoration techniques. “Rather than a plain lacquer or simple label, I want to look at new ways of decorating glass and how we can innovate to create something more expressive,” she explains.

Accessories to better showcase the brand’s products are also an area of exploration, such as baroque-inspired 3D printed candle stands decorated using metallization.

This summer, the brand is launching a fragrance diffuser matching the scents of its Trois and Cinq candles. The 150ml black reed diffusers feature an alcohol-free base made from an oil that gives the fragrance a longer life.
