The Reach: The Macallan sculpts its oldest-ever whisky

The Macallan The Reach is the Scotch whisky brand’s oldest expression to date. The 81-year-old single malt is housed in a mouth-blown decanter cradled in bronze.

For The Reach, its 81-year-old single malt, The Macallan opted for a bespoke, handcrafted decanter with an “organic” silhouette. Working with independent designer Scott Jarvie, Scottish glass studio Glasstorm used a traditional process to craft the mouth-blown, hot glass to create a decanter with a rippled surface. It also features subtle indentations matching the fingertips of the bronze hands – the work of Scottish sculptor Saskia Robinson – that support the decanter.

For the secondary packaging, The Macallan commissioned an elm wood coffret (John Galvin Design).

The coffret’s five ‘petal’ doors slide back on a pedestal base to reveal the decanter and the sculpture inside. Brass fixtures and fittings – milled to micro-millimetric tolerances – are oxidized and treated with jade oil to echo the bronze sculpture’s surface.
