2022 Verallia Design Awards rethink glass bottles for no/low drinks

French glassmaker Verallia revealed the winners of its 2022 Design Awards at a ceremony in Paris last week. Formes de Luxe/Luxe Packaging Insight journalist Katie Nichol was a jury member for this year's event, which judged design students’ submissions around the theme of “no/low”.

In the Still & Sparkling Wines category, Elise Souchet’s (Cité scolaire Raymond Loewy de la Souterraine) project – Mue – was crowned the winner. A shiny finish gives way to a frosted finish, emphasizing the “crumpled fabric” effect at the base that makes it look as though the bottle has shed its skin to then pull on another.

 

The Genever project in the Spirits category from Stanislas Raba and Nicolas Mizzon (Université de Technologie de Compiègne) impressed the jury for its storytelling, with the bottle encapsulating the visual codes of the spirits category and bearing a green hue so as to integrate recycled glass.

 

In the Beer category, Jeanne Bonaimé’s (Bellecour École de Lyon) project Samy made reference to “Sam”, the name given to the designated driver in French. Bonaimé explained that the bottle, with its avant-gardiste aesthetic, is designed to be included in a pack of beers so that the driver has his/or her place in the evening.

 

The patron of the event, glass artist and researcher Lucile Viaud awarded a special prize to the Bottle Cape project from Manon Choux (ESAAB de Nevers). The amber-colored beer bottle is engraved on its lower half with shapes inspired by the hop cones used in the brewing process.

 

This year's Special Prize was awarded to packaging designed for a sporting event. Loïc Pellissier (Lycée Polyvalent Rive Gauche de Toulouse), who was participating in the Verallia Design Awards for the second time, impressed the jury with his project La Torche. The bottle's elongated and oblong form is reminiscent of an Olympic torch, and was described by the jury as “innovative, eye-catching and marketable.”
