Bulgari L'Opera Grandiosa: Venetian glassmaking meets high jewelry

Bulgari’s (LVMH) one-of-a-kind L’Opera Grandiosa fragrance is housed in a Murano glass flacon adorned with gold and colored gemstones. The €50,000 creation was unveiled for the reopening of Parisian department store La Samaritaine – also owned by LVMH – late last year.

High-jewelry expertise combines with traditional Venetian glassmaking techniques for Bulgari’s L’Opera Grandiosa. The mouth-blown flacon (Fornace Mian) in Venetian glass is crafted using the sbruffo technique: several layers of glass with different shades and degrees of translucency combine to create the amethyst-colored bottle that evokes Bulgari’s jewelry creations. The inscription on the base of the bottle, “1/1” certifies that the piece is unique.

At Bulgari’s High Jewelry workshop, 18-carat rose gold and colored gems were used to craft the flacon adornment and the cap. The “necklace”, a nod to the brand’s Serpenti design, is made of hexagonal gold scales set with rubellites, amethysts and citrines. The smooth, spherical malachite cap is evocative of Bulgari’s cabochon cut. On the bottle's neck, the Bulgari logo is engraved and flanked on each side by a brilliant cut diamond.

The flacon holds Bulgari’s Le Gemme Imperiali Desiria eau de parfum. Created by perfumer Daniela Andrier (Givaudan), it blends notes of magnolia, rose and a musk accord.

L’Opera Grandiosa went on sale at La Samaritaine for €50,000 to mark the Parisian department store’s reopening last fall.
